This article shows how to configure video player app part.


The Video Player App Part allows you to play videos on a SharePoint page. For newer browsers, it uses the HTML5 <video> ​​ tag to generate Video Player, and for old browsers which does not support HTML5 content it uses the Adobe Flash Player. Due to HTML5 capabilities of the video player, it also plays on mobile devices. In addition, it supports rich features like HTML5 captions, etc.


​Who can configure Video Player?

​User who has "Manage Web" permission can configure Video Player App part. Generally, site collection owner's group members have "Manage Web" permission for site collection. 

How can I​ add an video player app part on a page?​​

User can follow below given steps to add an app part on a page

  1. ​[Click] on page from the top of the tab​
  2. ​[Click] on [Edit page] link from the [ribbon]
  3. [Click] on Add App ​part Button.​
  4. [Select] [Video Player] App Part from the Emgage Group
  5. [Click] on [OK] or [Done]
  6. [Click] on [Save] from [Page>Save] ribbon/menu

Can I configure Video Player for site and sub sites in site collection separately?​​

Yes, as of build 1.2.1 Video Player are possible to add at root level site (Root Web) adn Sub sites. it will work as per that particular level of site.

How to configure Video Player for site ?

To add a video player app part on a page follow the steps provided as above.

  1. ​Click on the gear icon available at the bottom of the page.
  2. It will open up the configuration page wit the following fields
    • ​​Video Source
    • Caption File
    • PlaceHolderImage
    • Aspect Ratio
    • ​Auto Play

User can add a url as a video source.
Caption File
User can add a url to be treated as a caption file for the added video source.The extension for this file should be .vtt
User can add a url to be treated as a place holder image for the added video source.
Aspect Ratio
The aspect ratio of a video describes the proportional relationship between its width and its height. It is commonly expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, as in 16:9.In a video player app part user has two choices 16:9 and 4:3
​Auto Play​
User has choice to make a video auto play when page loads or not.


What format of videos are supported?​

​​​As of build 1.2.1 Video Player supports only .mp4 format for now. 

Do I need to upload videos on sharepoint site in order to play it?​

Yes, you have to upload those videos in sharepoint ​site in order to play it along with the video player app part.

I have caption file, how can I show it along with video?

User can add a url to be treated as a caption file for the added video source.The extension for this file should be .vtt​​​

Which borwsers are supported?​

IE9+, Firefox, Chrome and safari browsers are supported for the video player app part and mobile browsers.
